Tianxue Du received a Wolfgang Schlegel Fellowship from the German Society for Medical Physics (DGMP) to support a research stay in the group of LMU’s long-standing collaborator Prof. Taiga Yamaya at the Institute for Quantum Medical Science, part of Japan’s National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST).

During his PhD in Medical Physics at LMU, Du developed a fast computational method for predicting the distribution of positron-emitting nuclides generated during carbon-ion irradiation (see https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1361-6560/adecdd and https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1361-6560/ae6226). Comparing such predictions with positron emission tomography (PET) measurements provides a research framework for studying ion-beam range verification.

During his stay at QST, Du adapted the LMU-developed method using in-beam PET datasets acquired with the pioneering OpenPET scanner developed by Prof. Yamaya’s group. By combining LMU’s computational expertise with QST’s unique imaging technology and extensive clinical experience in carbon-ion therapy, the project marked an important step forward toward applying the method in ongoing and future clinical studies at QST.

The fellowship further strengthened the long-standing collaboration between the LMU Medical Physics group and
its partners at QST.
